Last Time at this spot

Yesterday we visited this housing area for the last time. For over two years we came here. We met several people, alone or with their dogs. Everyone was friendly.

The corporation constructing this development experienced financial difficulties during the USA housing market downturn in 2007, and all development stopped. At that time less than ten percent of the entire five-mile complex was completed. In the last year, the housing market has rebounded. This section is scheduled to resume construction in 2018.

We liked this subdivision because it had streets, streetlights, sidewalks, scraped lots and underground utilities. The other sections are undeveloped with coyotes, javelinas, rattlesnakes and other animals.

Although some folks think javelina is a pig, javelina is a “smaller, native species that feed mostly on prickly pear cactus. Somewhat similar in appearance and habits, feral hogs and javelinas are not related. While feral hogs are indeed true pigs, javelinas belong to a completely separate family of mammals.”

Until yesterday, we enjoyed this area. Bernie and Chris had enough exercise space. Striding on the sidewalks and streets provided my healthy workout. The fresh air and the lack of noise bestowed a pleasant experience.

We arrived slightly before dawn and ahead of sunset. During the hot summer season, those periods were best for exercising. It was also a time when most people were not around. We always tried to present a low profile. Some people don’t like dogs.

We met one such man yesterday.

It wasn’t a lengthy discussion. He insisted I was on private property, all five miles of it. My dogs weren’t on a leash. He saw my trek poles and my dogs were less than twenty feet from me. It didn’t matter.

Of course, he was correct. Some folks read a rulebook and categorically have no tolerance for anyone one hundred percent not following the rules. I’ve learned to never argue with these folks. Life is too short. I thanked him for his information, and we left the area.

Tomorrow, we go back to the desert.

Some people take the fun out of everything and I am convinced, got up on the wrong side of bed.

It was nice while you could use that area. Another adventure, another day.

  2. The fact is when you are in the wrong (and I was….with no leash) I can’t defend myself. However, I have an option… leave and find another place.

I’m hoping to have another 10 years (if both dogs live that long) to find places to allow them to run free and be happy. Sometime in their later years, they will just mosey along and walk placidly on a leash… fine. But for now… I want them to be free to jump, dart about and chase those elusive rabbits and blowing leaves.
